Dr. Paul Broun announces candidacy for Norwood seat Paul Broun, well-known conservative leader and long-time Republican activist, announced his candidacy for Congress last week. A physician and resident of Athens, Broun is seeking to fill the unexpired term of 10th District Congressman Charlie Norwood who recently passed away following a struggle against lung disease and cancer. Dr. Broun's father, the late state Senator Paul Broun, served for 38 years in the General Assembly. "Due to my dad's career in public service, I quite naturally developed an interest in politics and public policy," Broun observed, "but whereas he was a Democrat, and in many ways fairly liberal, I became a very conservative Republican." Dr. Broun is the founding president of the Georgia Republican Assembly. Broun declared that he will be "a strong voice in Congress for the mainstream conservative values shared by the vast majority of Georgians." He listed those values as low taxes, limited government, strong national defense, securing our borders against illegal immigration, and preserving America's religious heritage. Broun is a supporter of the Fair Tax concept initiated by Georgia Congressman John Linder. The Fair Tax bill would abolish the federal income tax and the IRS, corporate income taxes, and estate taxes and replace them with a national sales tax. "My experiences as a family physician and emergency medicine physician have given me great empathy for the impact, physically and financially, of sickness on individuals and their families," Broun said, adding that he plans to use his expertise as a medical professional to address the need to make healthcare accessible and affordable. "I am dedicated to helping families. That is reflected in the nature of my practice which is focused on making house calls. I will take that same dedication to Congress." Broun said that as a Congressman he will apply a four-way test to all legislation: 1. Is it constitutional and a proper function of government? 2. Is it morally correct? 3. Is it something that we really need? 4. Is it something that we can afford?
Dr. Broun is president of the Georgia Sport Shooting Association, chairman of the board of the Georgia Wildlife Association, life member of the NRA, member of Gun Owners of America, UGA President's Club, Gideons International, and Rotary Club. He and his wife Niki have been married for 22 years and are the parents of two adult daughters and a teenage son. They have a grandson and a granddaughter and are members of Prince Avenue Baptist Church in Athens. Broun has served as children's ministry leader and has participated in missions trips, including one to Iraq in 2004.
