'07 Tigers make it to state playoffs but lose in 1st round to Manchester

The Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Boys Varsity Basketball team finished its season at 16-12 last Saturday. Team members include (front row, l-r) Dontai Tutt, Jarekus Bowman, Remardo King, Kelmetrus Wylie, DeAnre Stewart, Gary Wilburn, Chris Wooten, (back row) Coach Don Keiser, Luscious Stewart, Scottie Long, Ricardo Davis, Larry Davis, Khiry Tutt, and Coach Lazarous Chennault.
After keeping it close through most of the first half and coming within just two points at one point, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers fell victim to Manchester in the first round of the Georgia State Class AA basketball playoffs last Saturday night, 62-84.

A 16-18 with just seconds to go in the half, Manchester sank a threepointer that began the steady pulling away and eventual undoing of the Tigers.

"We beat the press when we laid it up like I told them to," Head Coach Don Keiser said. But otherwise W-W had shooting troubles. "We couldn't throw it in the ocean, and they hit everything," he said.

Keiser said Manchester was "12 deep and there was no drop off." He admitted that competition in Class AA was tougher than his preseason expectations when he thought this season would actually be less strenuous than last.

"I always thought basketball was easier in AA, but it wasn't," he said. Still, it was his sixth straight trip to the state playoffs and a 16-12 record in AA is certainly respectable.

Saturday's effort was led by Lucious Stewart and Larry Davis who pumped in 16 points apiece and Khiry Tutt had 11 points.

On Monday, Auburn University called Keiser to invite Stewart for an official visit. "That's really neat," Keiser commented. "That's the biggest one I've ever had to call."
