Former Tiger finishes college career, will enter NFLdraft after Pro Day tests
Two "Pro Days" a week apart at Fort Valley on March 16 and at Carson- Newman on March 23 will test his abilities and skills as invited pro scouts evaluate participating players' speed, strength, and skill at their various positions. After that, Cofer hopes to be picked up in the NFLdraft. If he's not, however, he plans to take part in the southeastern combines on May 6 at Georgia Tech. If he's good enough there, he says, he would then go to the national combines in Indianapolis. In the meantime, Cofer will go through a series of individual tryouts with several arena football organizations including the New Orleans Voodoo, the Kansas City Brigade, the Tampa Bay Storm, and the Orlando Predators. "I just want to keep playing football and make some money doing it," Cofer said of his love for the game. "And if I do make it big," he continued, "I want to do something for Washington through some big sponsors. It would be good to give back." Cofer is staying in shape with a rigorous more-than-four-hour workout every day supervised by his personal trainer. The daily regimen includes speed work and strength conditioning with weights. Cofer began his college career at Carson-Newman where, as a red-shirt freshman, he logged 10 tackles and two knockdowns. He transferred to Fort Valley State as a sophomore where he immediately became a starter and made second team All-Conference in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. During that year he had 45 tackles, six interceptions, and seven knockdowns. As a junior, Cofer had 30 tackles, a pair of interceptions, and three knockdowns. His senior year was cut short by an injury which held him to participation in just five games. However, at the time of his injury, he was on track to repeat as All-Conference. He had already logged 17 tackles, two interceptions, and a knockdown. Cofer is a 2002 graduate of Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School and will finish at Fort Valley on May 5 with a bachelor's degree in Social Work. As a backup plan, he is pursuing a coaching position in either Wilkes County or Greene County.
On Valentine's Day this year, Cofer married the former Sia Allen. They are the parents of two sons, Nicholas, four, and Jaden, nine months.
