Lincoln Co. youth gets Grand Champ at steer show

Greg Callaway (at left) showed the champion commercial heifer at the annual show last Saturday.
Wilkes County FFA member Ethan Armour, who showed last year's grand champion steer, took reserve champion this year to Lincoln County's Dalton Tankersley at the 53rd annual Washington Area Steer and Heifer Show Saturday.

Rayle EMC purchased the Grand Champion steer for $3 a pound, and Farmers and Merchants Bank purchased the Reserve Champion steer for $2.50 a pound.

In addition to Armour's reserve champion steer, Wilkes County's Greg Callaway showed the champion commercial heifer, and Sheena Kopecky took light champion steer, with Josh Goldman taking light reserve. Fourth-grader Jackson Armour of Wilkes 4-H made a good showing taking Reserve with his other-breed heifer.

A dozen Wilkes County youth competed in the all-day event at the McGill-Woodruff Agricultural Center. The Wilkes County students participating were Ethan and Jackson Armour, Callaway, Garrard, Josh Goldman, Wright Gunter, Dalton Howard, Tommy Howard, Sheena Kopecky, Gabe Strother, Tabitha Tench, and Brantley Walker.

Judge Jary Douglas from Athens used the show as an educational opportunity, explaining to the young exhibitors what judges look for.

Results from the 53rd Annual Washington Area Steer and Heifer Show may be found on page 10 of this edition.
