Wilkes Co. 4-Hers show well in dairy competition
Speaking of her son, 4-H mom Tena Thomas said, "He's been waiting a long time to show in the dairy competition. It's what he's always wanted to do." It showed in Perry when William Thomas led his team by bringing home the highest placing in showmanship. He placed fourth in fourth grade showmanship followed by Hannah Strother, seventh; Miles Chafin, eighth; and Liam Smith, honorable mention. In fifth grade showmanship, Marisa Sifre placed fifth; Logan Griffin, seventh; Colby Moore, eighth; and Marlyse Sifre, tenth. In sixth grade showmanship Grant Chafin placed ninth; and Lauren Chafin received honorable mention. In ninth grade showmanship Morgen Swann placed eighth. The competition didn't stop with showmanship and neither did the Wilkes show team. "It takes a good 4-H'er to place in showmanship but it takes a good dairy calf to place in weight class," says Rick Smith, Wilkes County Extension Agent. With the guidance of 4-H volunteer Frank Jackson, the calf selection process proved fruitful for the dairy showmen. Wilkes County 4- H'ers made the following placements in their respective weight class: Grant Chafin, 13th; Miles Chafin, fifth; Logan Griffin, eighth; Colby Moore, sixth; Marisa Sifre, fourth; Marlyse Sifre, sixth; Liam Smith, fifth; Hannah Strother, sixth; Morgen Swann, seventh; and William Thomas, ninth. Lauren Chafin showed her competitive spirit by carrying two dairy heifers to Perry, placing eighth and eleventh. She also demonstrated her commitment to dairy and 4-H by an outstanding first place win in Junior Commercial Dairy Record Book. Also placing in Record Books were Logan Griffin, fourth; and Morgen Swann, fourth. In addition to showmanship and weight class, the Wilkes County Dairy 4-H'ers proved they are a team by winning Reserve Champion Junior Commercial Dairy Heifer Division II Herdsmen Award. The process that began in October with 4-H'ers receiving calves and ended at the Georgia National Junior Livestock Show was a valuable learning experience. Among other things, 4-H'ers learned animal husbandry, responsibility, and good sportsmanship while having fun. "Experiences such as this are not available everywhere and we are fortunate to live in Wilkes County where a 4-H'er can raise a show animal and receive such strong community support," Smith said. The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Show Team and Extension staff expresses appreciation to all those who made this event possible. Special recognition goes to two 4-H youth leaders. Morgen Swann and Lauren Chafin distinguished themselves as outstanding 4-H'ers by extra preparation for the show, assistance to the volunteer leadership, and guidance to the novice showmen. Frank and Carol Jackson served as volunteer leaders. They provided organization, transportation for animal to events, and dairy expertise.
Finally, appreciation was expressed to supporters whose contributions made this year's 4-H Dairy Show Team a success. These include the Wilkes County Cattlemen's Association, Optimist Club, McDonald's, Tyler's Machine Shop, Wood Specialty Co., Pliant Corporation, Palmer Equipment, Burdette Mill & Gin, Southern States, Intervet Inc., Wilkes County Veterinary Services, Colonial Building Supply, Washington Wood Products, Peyton McGill, A&J Dairy, Billy McAvoy Dairy, Ray Moore Jr. Dairy, Marty Smith Dairy, Ellis Thornton, Larry Chapman, and Audra Chapman.
