The News-Reporter last week is just another reminder why so many people are moving out of the Atlanta area. ..Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Keener visited Mr. and Mrs. Chris (Angie) Keener, Madison and Nolan Sunday, and attended the birthday party for Madison, who turned four. The party took a downward turn about halfway. Angie's parents were called to Emory, where Angie's grandfather, Truitt Brown of Hartwell, was in very serious condition. Her parents left; however, about an hour later that call came we all dread getting that Mr. Brown had passed away. Please remember the Truitt Brown family in your prayers. ..Thank you Petal Pushers, Talk of the Town, Bee Southern, and Washington Cellulars for the great sidewalk sale over the weekend. It was great weather to be out and about shopping. ..Mrs. Edna Lamar called to tell us that her niece, Sonja Dixon of Enterprise, Ala., worked in the office of the school that was hit by the tornado last Thursday. The office was in a part of the building that was not hit and her niece was not injured. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in that tragedy. ..It was brought to our attention that in reminiscing about all the old landmarks in Tignall, that nothing was ever mentioned about the railroad that came through the town. In talking to Dr. Bamford we found out that the Elberton & Eastern railroad tracks came to Tignall the year that she was born which was June 1913. Dr. Bamford said that her brother John sat on the hill back of their home and watched the train Number One come through. She said there was a big barbecue celebration in Tignall. This stirred up some curiosity to do some more research. We found out that Tignall was incorporated in 1907, which means we should be celebrating a centennial this year. the town of Tignall was nothing but crossroads where citizens only received their mail twice a week until the railroad made it a booming place. There was a special Tignall edition from the
Washington Reporter dated July 3, 1913. This paper told the history of Tignall. By the way, the cost of the paper was $1 per year in advance. The railroad made this crossroads into a town. The depot was located on South Hulin Avenue south of Danburg Street. Oh, and it was Huling Avenue then, not Hulin. The railroad came between the Methodist Church and the Everett Denard place where it crossed the road and went back of the LeRoy homes. The tracks reached Washington around 1916. Operation ceased in December 1934. ..Let's keep Bob Westbrook in our prayers as he is having serious problems with his heart. ..Vera Harper had emergency eye surgery last week. Let's remember her in our prayers also. ..We extend our sympathy to Neal, Kelly, Keaton, and Kirby Wilson. Kelly's niece, Cheryl Helmly of Thomson, was killed in an automobile accident last week. I understand she and Kirby had been the best of friends. ..Ladies of the Mallorysville Baptist Church have started another Bible Study every Sunday afternoon at 5:00 called "Victoriously Frazzled" by Cindi Wood. ..Visiting last Friday night with Richard and Carolyn Gammon were Lamar and Helen McKinney of Martinez. ..Alex and Kay Tyler enjoyed having their granddaughter, Sydney Tyler of Hoschton, visit them for the weekend. Her brothers were very busy over the weekend. Jordan received superior rating at a music festival Friday night in Gainesville, then on Saturday he won the state championship in his weight level. Caleb was chosen to be on the Awana team to compete at the Awana Olympics in Dacula. His team won third place. Kay and Alex attended Jordan's piano recital in Commerce Sunday afternoon. Kay and Alex are very proud of both their grandsons and also proud of Sydney for she is a champion shopper. She really enjoys shopping with great-aunt because they shop for things like pink hair pieces and try on sparkly acrylic high heels. ..Spending the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Dave Derrick were Laura and Kathryn Ashe of Rock Hill, S.C., and Lauren Ashe of Greenville. ..Members of Tignall Baptist Church are so proud of how beautiful the church looks with its partially renovated sanctuary. We can't wait to see the final project. ..Those from this area attending the Camellia Day Luncheon at the Augusta Country Club on Wednesday were Pat Mack, Edna Rhodes, Doris Rhodes, Sara Frances Henderson, Faye Durham, Linda Burns, Mable Johnson, Sally Kennedy, Mary Webster, and Celeste Adams. ..Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ware and Mr. and Mrs. Scott Ware and Stacey attended a first birthday party for Katlyn Howell, Scott's niece in Hartwell, Saturday. Saturday night, Scott, Kathy and Stacey visited Kathy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Vandiver of Union Point.
