IV Bray's decathlon team wins state honors for the fifth year

Berkmar High School at Lilburn has been named the Georgia academic decathlon state champion for the fifth year in a row.

The team is coached by IV Bray, formerly of Washington-Wilkes and son of Ralph and Kay Bray.

The school was honored Sunday during the Professional Association of Georgia Educators" Georgia Academic Decathlon awards banquet. More than 210 high school students from 20 school districts competed in the state championship Friday and Saturday at Berkmar High School.

The competition topic was "China and Its Influence on the World," and students answered questions about economics, art, language and literature, mathematics, social science, and music.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesman, Sloan Roach, said, "Berkmar has proved year after year what a strong academic team they have. Their success is evidence of commitment by the students and coaches," she said.

Several Berkmar students won individual honors. The team will compete in the U.S. Academic Decathlon National Finals in April in Honolulu, Hawaii.
