Hudgens withdraws from Congressional Tenth District race

Just a day after campaigning at a breakfast meeting in Washington last week, Republican state Senator Ralph T. Hudgens dropped out from the race to fill the seat of the recently deceased Charlie Norwood.

"I've been out here three weeks on the campaign trail," Hudgens told the Madison County Journal Friday. "I just don't have the fire in the belly that I need to do this."

More than 50 friends and supporters had come out for Hudgens at a fundraising breakfast in Washington Thursday morning, where the thencandidate spoke of his 11 years in the Georgia General Assembly and his dedication to reducing the size of government and relieving the burden of taxes from the public.

The departure of Hudgens is seen as a boost for Wilkes County's state Sen. Jim Whitehead, who political insiders say is the favorite in the June special election for the traditionally Republican-leaning 10th District seat.

In addition to Whitehead, Republicans who have announced plans to run for the seat include Dr. Paul Broun Jr., of Athens; Bill Greene, founder and president of RightMarch.com, Braselton; Julian Hutchins of Augusta; Jackie Poteet, founder of Apartment Finders, Augusta; and a Conyers real estate broker, Nate Pulliam.

Democrats who have announced a run include Terry Holley of Grovetown and attorney Evita Paschall of Augusta.

A Conyers Libertarian, Jim Sendelbach, is also seeking the seat.

With so many candidates running on the June 19 ballot, it's likely that no candidate will receive the majority vote needed to be declared the outright winner. If no candidate tops 50 percent, the top two vote-getters, regardless of their party, will advance to a July 17 runoff.
