The Office Cat
A group from the First United Methodist Church went to Warren County Saturday to assist with the cleanup after the recent tornado damage to the area. They took chainsaws to cut trees into firewood, cleaned up debris, and did some burning off to clear the area. The group reports that there is still a great need for help in the area. Many residents are staying in makeshift trailers because their houses have been condemned and they did not get electrical power until this past weekend. Church members provided the storm victims with their first hot meal Monday night when they delivered food which had been prepared by one of the Sunday School classes. The nine church members who have been participating in this effort are Rich and Gale Siebert, Ed and Susan Pope, Tina and Jeff Blakey, Bruce Holes, and Ralph and and Kay Bray. Anyone who would like to offer assistance can call the office at the First United Methodist Church - 706-678- 7116. .. A letter from Charles May gives details about a visit that he made, along with his brother Julian, to the old May family home across the street from The News-Reporter. Sometimes when I have time to figure out all the details of their visit, I will give a full account of it. Right now I'll just give a few highlights. Charles is 71 and Julian is 73 and they grew up in that beautiful Victorian house next door to the First Baptist Church. They visited in Tignall where their father, Dr. C.J. May, practiced dentistry for many years in the old bank building before he moved his practice to Washington in the building that now houses Mercer Harris Photography. They tracked many relatives of their mother, Beulah Stribling May, and her 11 siblings who grew up in Tignall. They visited other May relatives and locations in Lincolnton, Augusta, Thomson and Millen. And sampled barbecue every chance they got. Julian is retired as vice-president of Delta Airlines and now lives in Kennesaw. Charles lives in Washington, D.C., where he is a semi-retired builder/broker, experienced in historic restorations and barbecue. . . . Both May sons reached a unanimous decision that the barbecue at Randall and Greg Denard's Washington Food Market is the "hands down best!" . . . And they have sampled a lot of barbecue! .. Liz Reynolds has been sorting some of the papers and collections of her sister, the late Helen Hodgson. She brought me a copy of a program she found. It's an "Examination" held at Burdett Academy on Thursday, August 3, 1871. The Examination began at one o'clock and lasted late into the night. There were 25 boys and 13 girls on the program. F.H. Colley delivered an oration and there were many old Wilkes County family names appearing on the program. Some of them were Burdett, Holliday, Gresham, McMekin, Kelley, Newsome, McKenney, Simpson, Booker, Thaxton, Sherwood, Reese, Paschal, Patterson, and Dyson. . . . There was a lot of drama and poetry on the program. .. It's just two weeks until the Tour of Homes - March 31 - and there is lots to be done in the community in preparation for the Tour. If we all get busy now in this beautiful weather we are having and clean our yards and sidewalks they will all be ready for our visitors. . . . There is lots to be done, too, here at The News-Reporter to produce the annual Tour of Homes Supplement which will be included in The New-Reporter's March 29 issue. The supplement features all the homes on the Tour with pictures and information about them, and also has advertisements for local businesses and individuals. This issue will be the first time we will be using full color. Any business or individual who plans to have an advertisement in this supplement needs to be aware that the deadline for getting those to us is Friday, March 16 - this coming Friday. You can either call The News- Reporter at 706-678-2636, or call Tara Townsend at 706-678-7370. . . . It will be a beautiful paper! ..
