Tigers beat Warriors, getting ready for region competition

Demont Gresham (left) pitched a complete game and Drew Wilson (right) batted in runs to beat Jefferson County Monday.
The Washington-Wilkes Tigers came back from a long break and smashed the Jefferson County Warriors 12-2 in a mercy-rule-shortened baseball game on Monday, March 12. The six-inning win put the Tigers at 3-1-1 for the season and set the stage for region competition which begins next week.

Senior ace Demont Gresham got his first start on the mound Monday and pitched a complete game against the Warriors. Through the six innings, Gresham logged an impressive 13 strikeouts while allowing only one earned run.

Defensively, W-W was slightly off but some minor throwing errors cost the team only one run and a barrage of Tiger hits more than made up for it.

Caleb Saggus led off with a walk in the first inning and Gresham and sophomore Drew Wilson followed with a pair of RBI singles. In the third inning, the Tigers score three more runs off consecutive singles from Jonathon Nicholson, Clete Wilson, and Gresham. Jerrick Derricott laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put Wilson and Gresham in scoring position. Then Drew Wilson tapped an RBI fielder's choice to score both runners.

Four more runs crossed the plate for W-W in the bottom of the fourth with singles from Kelley Roberts, Gresham, and Drew Wilson, fol- lowed by a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Jackson. In the fifth, Jefferson walked in a Tiger run.

Saggus ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out double to left field driving in the winning run.

This Saturday, March 17, the Tigers will travel to Thomson for the second game of a double-bill with the Bulldogs. The W-W B-team will start the action with a game at 9:30 a.m. and the varsity will play beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Region competition will begin for the Tigers next Tuesday, March 20, when Greene County invades Tiger Field for a 5 p.m. start. Putnam, Oglethorpe, North Oconee, and Morgan follow in consecutive games taking the season into April.
Third baseman Jerrick Derricott scoops the throw and the Jefferson base runner has no hope of making it safely to the bag.
