Wilkes teachers, administrators fired up over new school improvement training
By KIP BURKE news editor

Calling the recent GLISSI training "best professional development training I've ever taken," Wilkes County Superintendent of Schools Joyce Williams told Monday night's Wilkes County Board of Education meeting that she and her district change team are ready to make the changes they need to help all the students in the district achieve their best.

Wearing their bright goldenrodyellow dress shirts from the Georgia Leadership Institute for Sustained School Improvement (GLISSI) training were Wilkes County's Janet Pharr, Bill Pendrey, Deliki Lee, Wanda Jenkins, Steve Echols, Marie Echols, and Dr. Rosemary Caddell. They received a certificate and pin for completion of the course.

"This is the most exciting thing in my 34 years of education," Williams said. "We're going to be looking at data, and working hard, and making the changes we need. And everybody is going to have to rally around the bottom line, which is student achievement." GLISSI will invest $25,000 in the district change team to help stimulate the most academic achievement possible from Wilkes County students, she said. The regular March board meeting saw Board Chairman Ricky Callaway and board members Bob Guin, Kay Finnell, Kelly Powell, and Steven Albertson, along with Superintendent Williams facing a sizable crowd of visitors. "Wonder what's going on?" Callaway said with a smile. He did announce one change to the meeting's agenda. Nathaniel Cullars had asked to be on the agenda to discuss "Bus Use and Nepotism Policy" but did not attend. Finnell said that he was unable to attend Monday's meeting asked to be on the agenda next month. Many of the visitors were interested in the personnel action that the board considered in a lengthy executive session at the end of the regular meeting, and stayed until the open meeting resumed near 9 p.m. The board, largely, was deciding on the recommended selection of the new assistant principal for Washington Wilkes High School. The superintendent recommended high school teacher Mark Ward be selected, and the board voted its approval. Board member Finnell cast the only opposing vote. In the superintendent's construction update, Williams said that the revised set of school complex plans were done, and that sealed bids from general contractors were being received until March 28.

Williams also reported that the Georgia Department of Transportation indicated that it would award $250,000 toward new deceleration lanes near the school site if the board chose to go ahead with the project.

In other business, the board approved an out-of-state trip for five seniors to the University of Central Florida.

During the executive session, the substitute teacher list was approved and the board accepted the superintendent's recommendation for three other positions.
