SERVING HIS COUNTRY IN JAPAN
Shelton shares his experiences with his hometown

Adam Shelton enjoys his first meal at a real Japanese Resturaunt.
TO THE EDITOR:

My name is Matthew Shelton and I am a PFC in the United States Marine Corps serving over here in Japan. I am from Washington, Georgia, and people there know me more by the name of Adam. I worked at Bi-lo until the beginning of 2006 when I left for boot camp.

I had the pleasure of talking to a group of middle school students while I was on leave in September of last year. I was asked a lot of questions and tried to answer them to the best of my ability. I came back in November right after my MOS school at the right time and had the pleasure of being a part of the dedication of the bench for Lance Corporal [Phil] Scarborough.

I realize that many have come before me and have a great amount of respect for him and am honored to be a part of the same tradition he is. I met his parents after the ceremony and was asked to dinner and had a chance to talk to the family and give my thanks for the sacrifices of people like him. They treated me very well and expressed their thanks for what I was doing to serve my country. I have also gained a lot of respect from people in Washington and from my family.

The Kentai Bridge is one of the most historic parts of the sity of Iwakuni.
My grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Carter, talk about me all the time and are proud of their Marine. I just wanted the people of Washington to hear from a person who is serving his country and what it is like to be in a country where it is a little bit quieter than Iraq. I have enjoyed my little bit of time over here and had to opputunity to visit such places as Hiroshima and the town of Iwakuni outside of the gates where I am stationed at MCAS Iwakuni.

I have visited Yannai City which I have pictures I am sending to show a little of what Japan has to offer.I have enjoyed different resturaunts and would like to say that sushi is a very tasty treat here in Japan. The Mcdonald's is very much like the one I enjoy there in our hometown of Washington. I have seen what a tradtional Japanese house looks like. I just wanted to show a little bit of what Japan is like to the people there in Washington and hope for a chance to be a part of my hometown paper.
