Wilkes County youth get big trip to the big top attending ethnic 'UniverSoul Circus' in Atlanta
Horace Jordan, Supervisor and Coordinator for the Wilkes County Community Partnership A-STAR Program, sponsored the special field trip for the students and adult attendants including staff, parents, mentors, and volunteers. It was a warm, beautiful Saturday in Atlanta; and it was an "all tickets sold" packed house under the big blue tent. After Jordan organized the group, they meandered their way to section J for the spectacular noon performance. 2007 is the 14th year for the ethnic UniverSoul Circus. "It's a big party for the youth and the adults and it's also an opportunity to reward them for their commitment to the A-STAR Program," said. Jordan. The entertainment included three gaudily adorned elephants with wigs called "The Dream Girls." They were dressed in pink, green, and blue. The ringmaster said he thought the last one to exit was Beyonce. The show dogs (poodles) were the cutest, especially the little one that was dressed like a southern belle and walked a cat on a leash. Yes, a dog walking a cat. The contortionist was masterful, even though his positions were incredible and made the group flinch and groan as if in pain. The China Porcelain Dolls were unbelievable on their bicycles; 13 were balanced on one bike while cycling around the ring. The Jamaican dancers on stilts threw huge balls into the audience in every section. Everyone, especially the children, enjoyed maneuvering about to bat the balls. There was a Soul Train line for the adults; a dance contest for the youth, oldschool and new-school Gospel and R&B. Felicia Roebuck, an A-STAR parent, said, "Everyone should have the opportunity to experience this show. It's a wonderful ethnic mixture." Before embarking upon the return trip home, a nutritious snack was distributed by staff and volunteers. Five sites comprise the A-STAR Program: Reese Booker, Harper Street, Washington Heights, Baltimore, and Tignall. The A-STAR Program begins in September and runs through May.
