The Office Cat
.. One morning last week, Emilie Waters got a call from neighbor Joann Baldwin who was in a near panic. Joann was watching as a huge tour bus attempted to turn around in the front yard of the Waters home on East Robert Toombs Avenue. Now we all know how Emilie's husband Mark feels about his front yard and driveway and Joann saw this as a real catastrophe. . . . In reality, Mark, in cooperation with Washington-Wilkes' Director of Tourism Ashley Barnett, was on the bus. He was serving as a tour guide for a "familiarities" tour of the town for a group of tour bus operators and had arranged for the turn-around. But I don't think he meant for them to make deep tracks on his lawn! .. When Briarwood Academy presents the musical Oliver Friday and Saturday evenings, March 23-24, there will be many Washington- Wilkes students included in the cast. In featured roles will be Brittany Ray as the kind-hearted Nancy who helps Oliver; Chase Walker as Noah Claypole; Angela Kirkland as Charlotte; and Joseph Batrous as Dr. Grimwig. Laura Baldwin, Briarwood graduate who is now a student at the Medical College of Georgia, will be the piano accompanist for the musical. . . . Other Washington-Wilkes students participating include Adam Hardy, Lizzie Keen, Anna Goolsby, Taylor Stitcher, Sherrer Long, Brandy Ray, Marla Goolsby, Jarrett Keen, Emily Henderson, and Grace Blackmon-Hughes. .. You can't get this kind of service anywhere but in a small town. A sympathy card addressed to Kathryn Padgett was addressed to the Rayle post office, but Kathryn and Skip have a Washington address. The Rayle Postmaster called the senders of the card and told them that the address should be Washington, but that she would see that the card got to the Padgetts - and she did. .. You can find Washington-Wilkes in several magazines this month: Southern Living, Southern Distinction (full page advertisement), Victorian Homes and Y'all Magazine (Spring Tour of Homes), AAA Magazine, and a full page advertisement in Navigator Magazine. Tourism Director Ashley Barnett was on NBC Augusta's Morning Show Wednesday promoting the Tour. .. Anybody who knows Chan Drake knows that he is a Classic Cars Nut and an extraordinary mechanic, restorer, and re-builder of Classic Cars. An article, written by Chan himself, is in the April issue of Classic Chevy magazine which claims to be the "World's Best Resource for Restoring & Upgrading Your '55-'72" classic car. In 1989 there was an article in this same magazine titled "All in the Family with Father and Son Project" which told about three Classic Chevys which Chan and his sons, Todd and Chad, had rebuilt and owned. The article in this April magazine is titled "Still in the Family" and tells about Chan's latest project of restoring another Chevy for his wife Phyllis who always said that she didn't "want or need a classic." But Phyllis had a change of heart. Chan found a 1957 Chevy hardtop that had been wrecked in 1974 and a farmer had been plowing around it in his field for decades. Last year he finished rebuilding the car and Phyllis selected the exterior and interior colors "according to what I like, not what you like." It's a beautiful car and we hope to get permission from the magazine to run the whole story in The News-Reporter. .. By the end of this week, Washington Wilkes will have had three tour buses in town. The first one is the one mentioned above. Thursday of last week there was a bus full of ladies from Aiken, S.C., who were in town to shop and see various historic sites. There will be a MEAG Conference in Greensboro Thursday and a bus will be bringing a group to shop and tour. .. Paramedic-Nurse Bruce Bailey received the Hometown Hero Award presented by Channel 12 News, Augusta, Wednesday at the EMS office here in Washington- Wilkes. Bruce helped to save the life of Kristopher Hellmeister, a Banks County football player who was injured in a game with Washington Wilkes last fall. Kristopher and his mother, Elizabeth Walker, were present for the presentation. .. A group of students from the University of Georgia, under the direction of Dr. Pratt Cassity, professor at the university, will be on "The Corner" (Whitehall and Rusher streets) in Whitehall Friday and Saturday, gathering information from citizens in preparation for drawing plans for redesigning the area.
