W-W Tigers thump Greene Co. 15-0; facing some tough region games

The Tiger defense kept the Greene Tigers in check Tuesday afternoon as they chalked a shutout in the season's first region game. The Washington-Wilkes Tigers pounded the Greene County Tigers in the first AA region game of the 2007 season on Tuesday. In a convincing 15-0 win, W-W dominated the game from the very beginning and cruised to an easy win.

Region 8-AA action will remain hot and heavy through the next four games and the Tigers face Putnam County, Oglethorpe County, North Oconee, and Morgan County in upcoming games.

On Saturday, the Tigers traveled to Thomson and suffered a loss to the Bulldogs, 6-14. Clete Wilson was the losing pitching in his first loss of the year. But the Tiger defense committed four errors and misplayed a couple of fly balls to allow Thomson to score eight unearned runs in the game.

"Our defense allowed Thomson to score eight runs in the third off of a couple of balls that should have been caught," Head Coach Rob Jackson said. "The wind was blowing 20-25 mph and we did not make the proper adjustments on those fly balls that could have got us out of the inning. When you allow a good team like Thomson five or six outs per inning they will put some runs across the plate.

"I was pleased at how we responded after that bad inning but unfortunately we just got in too big of a hole to mount a comeback," Jackson commented.

The tiger offense stayed productive collecting 10 hits off of four different Thomson pitchers. Leading hitters for the tigers were Caleb Saggus 2-for-4, Jonathon Nicholson 2-for-4, Clete Wilson 2-for-4, Jerrick Derricott 1-for-3 and a sac bunt, Drew Wilson 2-for-4, and Kelley Roberts 1-3 with 3 RBI.

Next the Tigers travels to Putnam on Friday for a 5 p.m. start.
