Middle school Tigers split a pair with Red Devils; Jarrett Gaye leads Game 1 offense with 3 runs The Washington-Wilkes Middle School Tiger baseball team split a couple of games on Saturday, March 10, with the Lincoln County Red Devils, 12-4 and 4-5. Chase Shelton got the win in Game 1 striking out five batters and giving up three runs. Tom Saggus came on in relief and pitched two innings striking out three and giving up one run. Offensively, Jarrett Gaye led the Tigers with a double, a single, two walks, three runs scored and 3 RBIs. Whit Winfrey, Trey McAvoy, Michael Pharr, Tabor Jackson, James McAvoy, Robert McGill, and Chase Shelton all scored runs. In Game 2, Trey McAvoy pitched a complete game striking out four, scattering three hits over five innings. The Tiger defense had four errors in the contest allowing three runs to cross in the loss. Saggus led the Tigers in hitting with a single, a double, a run scored and an RBI. Winfrey and Trey McAvoy also scored runs. On Wednesday, March 14, the Tigers traveled to Elberton to face the Elbert Middle School Blue Devils. Game 1 ended in a tie, 5-5, and Game 2 ended in a loss, 5-6, to a very solid Elbert team. David Martin and Saggus both got no decisions in Game 1. Martin scattered five runs over three innings, with one strike out. Saggus pitched two scoreless innings. Trey McAvoy, Jackson, Winfrey, McGill, and Shelton each scored one run.
In Game 2, Saggus pitched 2-2/3 innings scattering five runs with three strikeouts. McGill pitched 2- 1/3 innings giving up one run and striking out three. The Tigers defense surrendered six errors allowing three runs.
