Wilkes teachers to attend academy on biotechnology

Jennifer Atkinson and Nathan Heaton have been accepted as participants in the Biotechnology Summer Academy to be held at Athens Technical College in June of this year.

The Biotechnology Summer Academy will be a "hands on" training workshop for teachers to learn how to use biotechnology equipment in their high school classrooms. The biotechnology programs at Athens Technical College and Gwinnett Technical College recently received a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to promote biotechnology and establish a pipeline of employees in the biotechnology sector.

Atkinson teaches biology at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School and Heaton teaches ag science. Both are excited about this opportunity and about working together to provide an interdisciplinary link to help students connect what they have learned in school with the "real world." Research has shown that students taught by integrating agriculture and scientific principles demonstrate higher achievement than students who have been taught solely by traditional approaches.

Once Atkinson and Heaton have completed the Academy, W-WCHS will have access to $2,000 worth of biotechnology equipment provided by the grant.
