FBLA members attend state leadership conference

The Washington-Wilkes High School Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended the 58th annual Georgia FBLA State Leadership Conference March 16-18 in Athens, Georgia, with over 3,000 Georgia FBLA members present.

Throughout the conference, several significant state leaders addressed the group with their messages of hard work, good character, and setting goals to be future business leaders. The state leaders included Sonny Perdue, Governor of Georgia; Michael Thurmond, Georgia Commissioner of Labor; and Zell Miller, former governor and U.S. senator. Members also attended many leadership workshops including Identity Theft, FBLA 101, Professionalism Jeopardy, Entrepreneurship Begins Today, Break the Ice…A New Approach to Chapter Meetings, and many others.

FBLA members also competed in various competitive events. Those in attendance and their competitive event included Brittany Anderson, Entrepreneurship; Blake Rogers, Entrepreneurship and Business Math; Jessica Echols, Entrepreneurship; James Cade, Entrepreneurship; Tyson Gilland, Concepts of Technology; John Lovvorn, Future Business Leader; Jessica Spradlin, Business Math; Amber Jordan, Introduction to Business; Gracen Ware, Accounting II; and Kelly Roberts, Desktop Publishing.

Each member attending also received a national FBLA Future Level Business Achievement Award (BAA). To receive the Future BAA Award, members had to complete an application and received points based on recruitment of members, community and school service projects, attendance at chapter meetings, attendance at leadership conferences and competitive events, and knowledge of FBLA.

John Lovvorn and Blake Rogers received the National BAA - Business Level by completing more FBLA activities in addition to the Future Level. The W-W Chapter of FBLA was awarded one of only 18 Chapters in Georgia the Bronze Chapter Award. The Chapter was also recognized as a National Chapter of Excellence through the BAA program and a national Chapter Achievement Award for Membership.

The highlight of the Leadership Conference was Saturday evening at a semi-formal awards program. Three members of the W-W Chapter received awards including Jessica Echols and Blake Rogers, sixth place in Entrepreneurship team; and John Lovvorn, seventh place Future Business Leader. Also attending the conference were Amy Harkins and Tanya Morgan, advisors.
