Lots of zippers let out after Saturday's big country cooking meal

Okay, so an amateur food critic visited Fishing Creek's Country Cooking Supper. In fact, a lot of people showed up, endowed with very good appetites, and a hankering for home cooking!

Despite all the statistics thrown at us that no one is cooking at home any more, these cooks prepared food like they have been taught by generations of Southerners. For a long time we have been given a heavy dose of propaganda from the food industry that the working woman (and, of course, man) hasn't got time to cook any more. But what are we saving all that time for? Another half-hour of television?

This was not microwave cooking as it was clear that these cooks were careful to preserve the best of the old in an era when practically no one bakes bread at home - except maybe Fishing Creek folks.

The food was set out buffet style which always presents the interesting challenge of combining a number of dishes in a creative way but not to the extent that you will not recognize the foods when you sit down to eat.

This was not like just any old-fashioned church or communal supper, we now know that this is the place to go for all your traditional favorites. There was turkey, dressing, pot roast, fried and barbecued chicken, pork chops, pork roast, beans, peas, corn, collards, turnip greens, macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs, salads, and, after asking one lady if the green-looking peas were English peas, she said, "No they are zippers." Well, it's a very good name because a lot of zippers had to be "let out" after Saturday night.

The desserts were to die for - every kind of cake and pie you could imagine.

What a great meal and what a great crowd. Thank you, Fishing Creek for the Country Cooking Supper.

So, when's the next supper?
