Tyrekus (A.J.) Bowman, out standing Washington-Wilkes Tiger basketball player now playing for Augusta State College, was the subject of the sports photograph that won first place for

Rainier Ehrhardth of The Augusta Chronicle in the Georgia Press Association Photo Clip Contest. The photograph was included in the Georgia Press Association Bulletin (newspaper) for March.

This weekend is the time for the annual Tour Of Homes and everybody is hoping for many visitors to our town. Both the Day Tour and the Candlelight Tour will be held on Saturday, March 31. Since there is no Tour for Friday evening, Downtown merchants will be open for shopping from 6 to 9 p.m. There will also be other activities on The Square.

..

The Washington Little Theater Company will be presenting the musical "Gypsy" Friday and Satur- day evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The show stars Debbie McLeod as Momma Rose.

..

Carol Cartledge met her friend, Debbie Moore, from Fairhope, Ala., in Atlanta last week and Carol told Debbie about going with a group from Washington-Wilkes to see the play "Menopause," which is so popular in Atlanta right now. Carol told her to be sure and see it if it came close to her hometown in Alabama. When Debbie got back home, she was attending a dinner when she heard people at the next table talking about going to see the play. One of them said she had gone with a group from Washington- Wilkes. Debbie immediately inquired about it and found that it was

Carol Boyle who just recently moved to Alabama and had gone with the Washington-Wilkes group before she moved.

Dolores McAvoy's art students will be displaying their art work at the Mary Willis Library during the month of April.

Be sure to see our Tour Supplement in this week's News-Reporter. It's the first-ever using full color and it's beautiful. Thanks to our advertisers for making it possible and to

Sparky and Mary Newsome for designing and producing it.

Kay Nelms at Hummingbird Hill in Logan Woods put out her hummingbird feeders Saturday, and Sunday there was a hummer at one of them. . . . I put my feeders out Saturday, but I've not seen any hummers yet.

The talk of the town this week is "the pollen." It's everywhere and thick and heavy, aggravating heads, eyes, noses and throats, and drumming up business for our doctors. Most folks agree that they've never seen as much pollen as they have this year. According to television news casts the "pollen count" reached a record high at 5000 Sunday. High is generally considered 120. . . . One man reports standing on his porch and seeing a cloud of pollen wafting through his yard on a gentle breeze.

..

With all the pollen hanging around, the final comment is usually, "If we could just get some rain." It doesn't look like that's likely. Norris says we had only 2.9 inches for the month of March and the average is usually 4.6.

..

We're attracting more and more out-of-town conferences and meetings to Washington-Wilkes. The quarterly meeting of Heartland of the Confederacy was held here Wednesday (March 28); and the Classic South Travel Association meets at the Fitzpatrick Friday (March 30.)

..

Washington-Wilkes Tourism Director

Ashley Barnett will be setting up a booth promoting Washington Wilkes at the Georgia Visitors Center on I-20 in Augusta April 6.

..

In the First Baptist Church parking lot last Wednesday I noticed a vehicle with a specialty tag on the front. On the left side it said "UGA;" on the right side it said "GT;" and in the middle it said, "House Divided." I think the vehicle belonged to Jeff and Shawn Hackney.

I don't know when I have thought about chinaberry trees, but I was reminded of them three times in the same day this week. Carolyn Gammon, writing in the Tignall News, told about remembering them as a child and what good climbing trees they were. She was "too chicken" to climb them but her sister Kay Tyler would frequently climb to the top of big ones. . . .

Smythe Newsome remembers that just about everybody had a chinaberry tree when he was growing up and that they were good climbing trees and the berries made good slingshot ammunition. He said he didn't know if it was true or not but he had heard that birds would eat the chinaberries and get drunk in the yard. . . . Steven Jones called to ask me if I had ever heard that when chinaberry tree buds are in full bloom it means that cold weather is gone for good. I had not heard that. He says his are in full bloom.

As an unofficial part of the Tour of Homes to help create some interest for Downtown, there will be an auction at the Tupper-Barnett House backyard starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Several Washington- Wilkes consigners have put some nice antiques, collectibles, etc., in for the sale. The auctioneer is Greg Hawkins from Waynesboro who is known for first class auctioneering. He has had lots of experience as an antiques auctioneer.

..

Bee Southern on The Square has a set of beautiful coasters featuring historic buildings in Washington- Wilkes, including the Mary Willis Library, Courthouse, Robert Toombs House, and The Fitzpatrick Hotel.

..

The Robert Toombs House has a new sign out front. It has Robert Toombs' picture on it.

..

Grading has resumed on the longrumored site of Taco Bell, KFC, and Advance Auto Parts. The site is located next to CVS on East Robert Toombs Avenue.

.. Here we are squabbling over chicken houses when the very life of Wilkes County is at stake in supporting or not supporting the proposed "regeneration" of Wills Memorial Hospital. Was it one the Old Testament prophets in the Book of Proverbs who said, "Where there is no vision, the people perish?" I think the plan is one of the best opportunities citizens of Wilkes County have had in a long time.
