Norman and Joan Echols honored at 50th Anniversary Celebration
Hosts for the occasion were Norman and Regina Echols of Jacksonville, Fla., Shane Echols and Lori Nelson of Virginia Beach, Va., Jason Echols and Clint Gunnoe of Rayle. For the celebration Mrs. Echols wore a three-piece champagne-colored silk crepe pantsuit with gold accents complemented by a corsage of yellow Alstroemeria lilies. Mr. Echols sported a boutonniere of yellow Alstroemeria lilies on the lapel of his black two-piece suit. The couple's vows were renewed by longtime friend, Rev. Roy Cates, pastor of Fishing Creek Baptist Church. All three of the couple's sons, Norman Echols Jr., Shane Echols and Jason Echols, stood with their parents for the renewal of vows. Both of Mrs. Echols's sisters, Martha Hall and Rubye Armour, were also present for the renewal of the vows and for the couple's marriage on March 9, l957, in McCormick, S.C., officiated by Rev. Cantrell. In honor of the occasion, the altar table in the sanctuary held a large gold urn of golden Asian lilies, pincushion chrysanthemums, carnations, gladioli, Alstroemeria lilies and greenery. A table in the vestibule of the church was covered with a lace overlay and decorated with a vase of lilies. On the table was the guest book attended by granddaughters, Adriane Echols of Rayle and Ashley Stone of MacClenny, Fla. After the service in the sanctuary everyone gathered in the fellowship hall for a reception. A small table at the entrance to the hall held the guest book and a basket of personalized Yankee votive candles that were given to all the guests. The buffet table held a gold cloth with a lace overlay and a beautiful arrangement of fresh golden Asian lilies, Alstroemeria lilies, pinchushion chrysanthemums, carnations and gladioli. A separate table dressed in the same design featured the anniversary cake, a three-tiered yellow cake with ivory icing. Made for the occasion by Karen Saggus, the cake was adorned with cascading fresh flowers and a gold 50th anniversary topper. It was served by granddaughter Adriane Echols and greatniece, Stephanie Bowen, both of Rayle. Punch was served by Betty Jean Echols of Rayle, sister-in-law of the couple, from a table adorned with a gold cloth and lace overlay. Also adorning the table was a dozen yellow roses, a gift from Eva Bufford of Atlanta. Enjoyed with banana punch and cake were fresh fruit with French cream, fresh vegetables with dip, cheese straws, chicken salad croissants, spinach dip, meatballs, sausage balls, and smoked sausages in sauce. Guest tables, covered in gold cloths, were centered with hurricanes with gold candles and flower rings. The piano in the fellowship hall held photos of the couple from high school years to the present. Also on the piano was a bouquet of yellow roses sent to the couple from Dr. Preston Lake of Middlesboro, Ky.
One hundred seven-five guests were invited. Out of town guests included Sam and Dixie Callaway of Monroe, Andy and Ashley Stone of MacClenny, Fla., John Mark and Betty Carpenter of Chestnut Mountain, William, Hope and Delaney Remsen and Bob and Judy Gill of Evans, Richard and Mae House of Carlton, Doris Callaway of Crawford, Lauren, Victoria and Julie Echols of Virginia Beach, Va., Trey Echols of Jacksonville, Fla., Eva Bufford of Atlanta, and Roy and Loretta Cates of Danburg.
