Tigers get good region start, unbeaten in first three games

First baseman Hunter Jackson strokes a hit for the Tigers.
It was a slow week for the Washington Wilkes Tigers on the baseball diamond with only one game played since the last reporting. But that game marked the second region win for the home team giving them a 2-0 leg up as the part of the season that really counts gets started. (W-W played its third region game at Oglethorpe County on Tuesday, March 27 - details were unavailable as of this writing.)

It was a comfortable 5-0 shutout on Friday that earned the Tigers their second region win. Putnam's War Eagles were no match for W-W at the plate and they just couldn't handle senior Demont Gresham's effective work from the mound.

Gresham pitched a complete game recording 12 strikeouts while allowing just two hits in the contest. He improved to 2-0 for the season.

Putnam's pitcher was a tough lefthander but the Tigers managed to play "small ball" to score their five runs. "This was by far the best pitcher we have faced to date," Head Coach Rob Jackson commented. "He had a lively fast ball and good control."

Jackson said he was proud of the way his team manufactured a run at a time by bunting and moving baserunners over to third base with less than two outs. "The lower half of our lineup had some productive at bats and that made a difference in this game," he said.

Leading hitters for the Tigers were Caleb Saggus, 2-for-4 and an RBI; Clete Wilson, 2-for-4; Ty McGill, 1- for-3 and an RBI; and Gresham, 1- for-4 and an RBI.

It has been a good start for the WW team which stands at 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Region 8AA. After the Oglethorpe game on Tuesday, the Tigers will travel to North Oconee on Friday for a 7 p.m. start.

Late-breaking win over Patriots!

Demont Gresham (3-0) got his third win of the season as he fanned a dozen batters at Oglethorpe County on Tuesday, March 27, leading the Tigers to a 5-4 win. The team is now 3-0 in Region 8AA. Details on this and upcoming games will be in next week's News-Reporter.
