Wilkes 4-H'ers celebrate '4-H Night at the Oscars' giving special recognition to achieving members

The 30th Annual Wilkes County 4-H Awards Banquet was held Saturday, March 24, in the cafeteria of Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School.

Using as a theme, "4-H Night at the Oscars," officers of the 4-H County Council and board members presided during the presentation of awards, entertainment, and special recognitions of accomplishments during the past year.

Molly Newsome and Brittany Klaus welcomed parents, grandparents, friends, and 4-H Club members to the banquet before awards were presented.

As a graduating senior, Molly Newsome received the Mitchell Willingham 4-H'er of the Year Scholarship sponsored by the estate of the late Mitchell Willingham. The award was presented by Marcie Simpson, County Extension Coordinator. Robert M. (Skeet) Willingham, nephew of Mitchell Willingham, was present for the awards banquet.

Tommy and Kathy Klaus received the Friend of 4-H Award for outstanding support of the 4-H program as volunteers.

Top awards during the evening went to the following 4-H members:

Lauren Chafin received the Outstanding Cloverleaf award; and Chance Stickney and Angela Broom received the Outstanding Junior Award. Brittany Klaus received the Gold Clover Award.

Teen Leader I awards went to Angela Broome, Courtney Broome, and Michael Edwards; Teen Leader I and II, Brittany Klaus; and Teen Leader I, II, and III, Christina Albertson and Mariah Crew.

Outstanding members were recognized in the following categories:

Beef Project - Jackson Armour

Dairy Project - Cloverleaf, William Thomas; Senior, Morgen Smith

Lauren Chafin, first place Commercial Dairy Heifer Record Book.

Lamb Project - Lauren Chafin Horse Club - Holley Burk

Horse Quiz Bowl - Elli Lindsey

Dairy Quiz Bowl - William Smith.

High Scorer at State Horse Judging Junior Team, Carly Cosby

High Scorer at Area Cotton Boll/ Consumer Jamboree Junior Team, Emily McNure.

High Scorer at Area Cotton Boll/ Consumer Jamboree Senior Team, Ty Owens

High Scorer at State Dairy Judging Junior Team, Morgen Swann

High Scorer at State Dairy Judging Senior Team, Tiffany Bowling

County Council members recognized were Molly Newsome, Brittany Klaus, Michael Edwards, Angela Broome, Chance Stickney, Lauren Chafin, Carly Cosby, and Nick Reville.

Board Members recognized were Christina Albertson, Mariah Crew, Joshua McLeroy, Dixie Lee Trimm; and Council Members, Emily McNure, Courtney Broome, John Pope, Alyssa Stockwell, and Amanda Wood.

Background piano music for the banquet was provided by Christina Albertson, Hayley Colvard, and John Pope. Vocal selections were presented by Brittany Klaus, Michael Edwards, Leslie Souther, Emily McNure, Dixie Lee Trimm, and Katie Trimm.

Appreciation was expressed to the Wilkes County Extension Staff: Marcie Simpson, County Extension Coordinator; Rick Smith, County Extension Agent; Jackie Crew, County 4-H Program Assistant; and Carol L. Jackson, County Extension Secretary.
