I wonder how many of you are old enough to remember hearing the peep, peep, peep of the little Easter chickens at Harper's 5 & 10 store on The Square in Washington? They always had all colors of little chickens for you to buy for your children at Easter. They also had ducks. I bought a cute little duck once for my son when he was about six years old. That duckling grew to be a big duck that took over the dog house and made a mess in the yard. So we decided he would enjoy the pond across the road and we took him (his name was Duck) to his new home. Well, he didn't like that new home and would come right back. He would stop at the side of the road and look both ways before crossing, then he would quack, quack, and waddle on across the road back to our house. ..Celeste Adams said that she has seven bluebird houses and that four of these houses have four eggs each. ..Ann Tiller of Washington and Carolyn Gammon attended the Delta Kappa Gamma state convention last Friday through Sunday at the Marriott Hotel on the River Walk in Augusta. Carolyn gave a presentation in the third session as she is the outgoing state World Fellowship chairman. They enjoyed the banquet and the entertainment and getting together with all their Delta Kappa Gamma friends. The flowers along the River Walk were beautiful last weekend just in time for the Masters. ..Eighteen-month-old Cole Turner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Turner of Hartwell, spent the weekend with his grandparents, Robin and Gene Turner. ..We are sorry to hear that Jack and Jean Rhodes have been sick. I understand they are a little better today. ..There will be an Easter breakfast at Tignall Baptist Church Sunday, April 8, at 9 a.m. ..The annual Easter egg hunt at Tignall Baptist Church will be Saturday, April 7, from 10:30 till noon with the youth department presenting a puppet show. Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as follows: "God made dogwoods and azaleas bloom at the same time to see just how much beauty we can stand." In Wilkes County, we have the dogwoods and azaleas; but we also have redbud trees and wisteria. Now
that is almost more than we can stand! When you are from Wilkes County and are also enjoying the tour, it is charming to listen to the various comments from visitors to this area about Washington, and the rolling countryside out toward Tignall and Danburg. How blessed we all are to live in this area of Georgia. ..Several people commented on the article about the Fishing Creek Country Cooking Supper and plan to go to the next supper. Food is a great communicator, reminding us when we eat a certain dish that maybe Aunt Rose's coconut pie or your grandmother's turkey and dressing tasted just like that served at the supper. Someone mentioned they could still remember their mom standing at the stove stirring creamed corn - yes, food is a great communicator. ..Sympathy is extended to the family of Sarah Sue (Wansley) Sutton of Knoxville, Tenn., who passed away on March 15. Regardless of political party, some of which are running for president, these individuals need to be defeated. Would you want to share your social security with someone who is in this country illegally? ..Have you heard about the Chick-fil- A chains giving away free food? It seems that the first 100 people to walk through the door on a certain day will receive free food for a year. Of course the day before this event, the chain has to close because people are set- ting up tents all over the parking lot and partying all night so they can get in line the next morning. It is quite a sight to behold. A few weeks ago, the Chick-fil-A over by Lowe's/Kroger's/ Home Depot in Athens staged such an event. Chick-fil-A is such a great fast food restaurant, always the supporter of education and character building for the youth of our country. ..There are several important issues facing our county at his time, the regeneration of Wills Memorial Hospital, zoning for our county, and the influx of poultry houses. All of these issues are important and more of our citizens need to get involved. ..What is this about the Asian ambrosia beetle? It seems this little creature attacks over 120 known trees and plants, including cherry, dogwood, pecan, redbud, magnolia and crape myrtle (all trees grown in our area.) It bores into the tree inoculating it with the ambrosial fungus and can lead to the death of the tree. Symptoms include the strand of boring dust protruding from the branches and wilting foliage. Once the plant is infested, insects within cannot be killed. Now, who would name such a vile creature after such a Southern delicacy? Leave our ambrosia out of this!
