Dillard E. Gartrell Funeral services for Dillard E. Gartrell, 89, of Washington were held Saturday, March 21, 2007, at the Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Washington, with full military honors and with Rev. Roy Andrews officiating. He died Sunday, March 25. Mr. Gartrell was a native of Wilkes County and the son of the late Myrtle Reid and Willie Gartrell. He served with the 92nd Buffalo Division in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II, receiving the Good Conduct medal, a Purple Heart medal, and three Battle Stars. His wife was the late Janet Walker Gartrell. He was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church where he had served as treasurer of the building fund and chairman of the board of trustees. Survivors include a son, Edgar Gartrell of Jersey City, N.J.; a daughter, Angela Griffin; two granddaughters, Keondra and Michaela Griffin, all of North Augusta, S.C.; and a sister, Marion Avery, Augusta. Nephews served as pallbearers.
McLendon Memorial Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of arrangements.
