Walter A. Cholmondeley Memorial services for Walter A. Cholmondeley, 85, were held Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at the Church of the Mediator in Washington. Interment was in the Church of the Mediator Garden. He died March 23 in New York. Mr. Cholmondeley was born in Harlem, N.Y., the second child of Walter and Stella Cholmondeley, Bajan immigrants. He joined the United States Army, fighting in World War II. He also attended the University of New Mexico where he studied music. He was a plainclothes corrections officer in New York City for 30 years. He was a deputy sheriff in New Mexico and Arizona and a captain in Las Vegas. Serving as a scripture reader at the Church of the Mediator in Washington Wilkes and at St. Mary's Episcopal church in Augusta gave him much joy in his later years.
Survivors include several children, Jacqueline Robertson, Walter Cholmondeley Jr., Aida Cholmondeley, Christopher Cholmondeley, and Bradford Cholmondeley; grandchildren, Sharae, Mikkia, Unique, Saadiqah, Joey, Nadelle, Denise, Angela, Walter III, and Walter IV; a number of great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Elsie Bennett, Maria Taylor, Arlene Blythe, and Shawn Grasso.
