The Washington-Wilkes Tigers beat the Oglethorpe County Patriots last week 5-4 to improve their region record to 3-0 and their overall record to 6-2-1. Senior Ace Demont Gresham pitched the complete game and improved his personal record to 3-0.

Gresham allowed only one earned run in the contest while giving up just five hits and striking out an even dozen Patriot batters.

The Tigers led from the start with a 1-0 margin after Jonathon Nicholson drew a walk and Gresham brought him in with a double to center field. Ty McGill started a two-out rally in the second with a single. He was followed by Hunter Jackson with another single and Caleb Saggus drove McGill home with a third single hit sharply up the middle.

Clete Wilson continued the rally in the third with a leadoff single. The Patriots gave Gresham a free trip to first base on an intentional walk and then Jerrick Derricott laid down a good sacrifice bunt to move Wilson and Gresham up to second and third. Kelley Roberts smacked a 2-RBI single and McGill followed with a single up the middle to put the Tigers up 5-1.

In the fourth, Oglethorpe responded with something of a rally brought on by a two-out error by the Tigers. The Patriots collected three runs on two hits and another error by the Tiger defense after the inning should have been over. Still it was not enough and the Tigers held on to win 5-4. Gresham finished up with scoreless and hitless pitching in the final three innings.

"I was pleased at how we jumped out to an early lead," Head Coach Rob Jackson said, "but we have to keep the intensity up throughout the entire game. Our bats went silent the last four innings and it put pressure on our defense to pull this one out.

"We made a couple of uncharacteristic errors in the fourth which let Oglethorpe get back into the ball game," Jackson continued. "Fortunately we settled down and played the last three innings error free. Demont threw the ball well and deserves

a lot of credit for the way he pitched."

Next the TiIgers will host Thomson today at Tiger Field beginning at 1 p.m.
