DOL will provide summer jobs for young people State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond has announced that the Georgia Department of Labor will provide $30,000 for summer jobs for young people ages 14 through 21 in the East Central Georgia area. Wilkes County is included in the program. The grant will help create jobs for 25 young people, including those with disabilities. The funds are part of a $1 million grant that the labor department will provide statewide to create summer jobs for young people in rural and urban Georgia communities with limited employment opportunities. In making the announcement, Commissioner Thurmond said, "The jobs created by this grant will offer many young people their best opportunity to get a job and earn wages this summer. Their experience in a real-life working environment will also provide them the opportunity to develop good work ethics, which will be vital when they enter the job market fulltime. They will also learn a lesson I learned long ago: There is dignity in work." The initiative is a partnership between the labor department and the state's 20 Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs). In its fifth year, the program has previously allocated $4.3 million to serve 4,788 young people across the state. Each person will typically work 32 hours per week for six weeks and earn $5.15 per hour. A wide variety of jobs in both the public and private sectors will be available for the young people.
Young people interested in applying for one of these summer jobs should contact their local Workforce Investment Board for more information. In the East Central Georgia area, the contact is Joyce Blevins, director of East Central Georgia Consortium, at 674 Washington Road, in Thomson. The telephone number is 706-595-8941.
