4-H Horse Club is working to get arena in good shape

Several dedicated members of the Wilkes County 4-H Horse Club braved the chilly temperatures and stiff winds on Saturday, April 7, to get the arena in shape for riding this spring. The arena, located behind the McGill-Woodruff Ag Center on the North Bypass, has not been used for horses in several years and is in need of being brought back into shape for safe footing for horses and riders.

Horace Hudson of Winterville spent several afternoons plowing and harrowing the arena in March. Club members were relieved to find out that the sand footing is in excellent shape and will not need replenishing. What the members must accomplish now is the removal of grass, weeds, rocks, and fire ants; then the panels can be replaced.

It should take about two more work sessions to complete these tasks. The next work day is tentatively set for April 21 at 10 a.m. Volunteers are welcome.

Members involved in the clean up day were Holley Burk, Anna Ezzell, Karlee Fiest, Andrea Hill, Flavius and Khalil Zahran, Amanda and Samantha Smith, and Emily and Kaitlyn Johns. The club members would like to thank Horace Hudson for his help because his expertise has been invaluable.
