Tigers win three during spring break to move into tie for Region 8-AA lead

DREW WILSON GOT THE WIN OVER THOMSON There are four region games to go for the Tigers.
During spring break week, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers were anything but inactive as they rolled through three important victories and punched up their season record to 9-3-1 and their Region 8-AA record to 5-1 and a tie for first place.

With wins over Thomson (nonregion), Greene County, and the previously No. 1 Morgan County, WW bounced back after suffering its only region loss to North Oconee at the end of last month. Three more games this week on consecutive days, Tuesday through Thursday, will test the Tigers' mettle in contests with traditional rivals.

Putnam County, whom the Tigers had already beaten once this season, was the Tuesday opponent and results were not available as of this writing. Details of Wednesday's game against Jefferson County will be reported next week due to printing deadlines this week. And today, April 12, the Oglethorpe County Patriots will come to Tiger Field to try and avenge the loss they suffered at the hands of W-W just a couple of weeks ago.

Results of the spring break wins, as provided by Head Coach Rob Jackson, are summarized below.

DEMONT GRESHAM GOT A DOUBLE AGAINST THE BULLDOGS He also won a complete game on the mound over Morgan County.
TIGERS 19, GREENE 9

Friday, April 6

At Greene County, junior Kelley Roberts got his first start on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings to pick up the win. Senior Clete Wilson came on in relief and recorded the final four outs of the mercy-ruleshortened game.

Wilson also homered (his third) in the game and was 2-for-2 at the plate. Other leading hitters were Caleb Saggus, 2-for-4 with two doubles; Jerrick Derricott, 2-for-3; Clint Echols, 2-for-4, and Lee Thompson, Spencer Swinson, and Josh Welch who were all 1-for-2.

TIGERS 5, THOMSON 1

Thursday, April 5

There may have been some apprehension going into Thursday's game since Thomson's Bulldogs had smacked 14 hits against the Tigers in their previous encounter. But the tables turned quite convincingly as W-W dominated the entire contest and Thomson looked more like Little Leaguers.

Sophomore Drew Wilson pitched five strong innings and got the win for the Tigers. Saggus came on for the final two innings and allowed only one hit while striking out three. Clete Wilson hit a home run in the game and Demont Gresham stroked a double while Saggus, Echols, and Thompson each collected singles.

TIGERS 4, MORGAN 3

Tuesday, April 3

Gresham was more than impressive in his complete game performance on the mound. The senior collected 14, count 'em - that's an average of two per inning, strikeouts while allowing only three hits and no earned runs.

Saggus led off with a single to start the game and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Jonathon Nicholson bunted Saggus to third and Saggus scored on a ground out by Clete Wilson.

It was Echols first varsity start and he took full advantage in the second inning. After Roberts reached on a single, Echols smacked a homer, his first, to boost the score to 3-0. But Morgan answered in the third by scoring three of its own as the result of two walks and two Tiger errors.

The game remained tied until the fifth inning when Saggus got on with a lead-off walk. He stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Nicholson hit a sac fly to left field which was good enough to score Saggus and seal the game at 4-3.
