'Have a good time at prom' but students are warned about risky behaviors Seniors and juniors at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School are making last-minute preparations for Saturday night's Junior-Senior Prom after weeks of planning and fund-raising. With a theme of "A Night on the Town," students and their guests will enjoy the evening at the Washington-Wilkes Country Club, with the prom starting at 8 p.m. and the senior walk set for 8:30. Fund-raising efforts have been underway for weeks, with money being raised from candy sales and from events like Wednesday's "Dress Down Day." Saturday will see the usual frantic preparation as girls get their hair and makeup done, and boys wait until the last possible minute to put on their tuxedos or suits. And later Saturday afternoon, as always, groups of girls and some couples will make the rounds around Washington, seeing and being seen in their prom finery. The Abstinence Youth Council of the Wilkes County Family Connection is reminding students that many of the activities that some students believe are part of prom night can have serious consequences that affect their future. "It is a good time for parents to talk to their teens about risky behaviors," says their advertisement in this issue, "discussing abstinence, sexual coercion, peer pressure, drinking and driving, and the connection between drinking, drugs, and sex."
"We want everybody to have a good time at the Prom," said WWCHS Principal Andrew Jackson. "But we want everybody to be safe, too."
