Lions Club to raise funds here for national White Cane Month The Washington Lions Club is accepting contributions for the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation this month in observance of White Cane Month. One hundred percent of all funds collected for White Cane go directly to the Lighthouse Foundation to provide sight services to indigent residents of Georgia. The Georgia Lighthouse receives discounted and donated services from over 300 eye doctors across the state, and discounts from numerous hospitals, including Emory University. The Lighthouse receives approximately four dollars in discounted and donated services for every dollar they spend in sight services. The foundation serves over 10,000 people a year in the state of Georgia. Locally, the Washington Lions Club provides eye exams and eyeglasses for needy families through- out the community. However, there are some services that are impossible for the local club to provide because of the cost involved. Those cases are turned over to the Lighthouse. Through the Georgia Lions Lighthouse hearing aids, eye surgeries, and other services are provided that might otherwise go unmet. "This event will allow citizens as well as businesses the opportunity to be a part of this great service to humanity," said Mary Hubbard, White Cane chairman for the Washington club.."Any donation toward funding the Lighthouse Foundation will be greatly appreciated."
Donation checks should be marked "White Cane" and made out to "The Georgia Lighthouse Foundation." They may be mailed to The Washington Lions Club; P.O. Box 52; Washington, GA 300673. For more information, contact Hubbard at 706-678-2422 or 706-678-7235.
