Make good choices at the prom
The program at a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Washington was a power point presentation on Wills Memorial Hospital. Those in charge couldn't get the computer to cooperate to present the program. Somebody in the audience cried out, "Is there a teenager in the house?" There was no teenager. But there was nine-year-old Liam (short for William) Smith, son of Wilkes County's Extension Agent Rick Smith. Liam came to the computer, peered at it for a few seconds, and touched two keys on the keyboard. Shazam! (Remember Captain Marvel?) The items flashed on the screen to thunderous applause and numerous exclamations from Kiwanians, and the presentation got underway.

The talk about town this week has been the wind that we had Sunday and Monday, especially Sunday. Weather reports stated that on Sunday there were sustained winds of 30-35 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. It's not hard to believe if you were out in the wind. It's amazing, too, that there was very little damage from falling trees and limbs. It never stopped from about 8 a.m. until after midnight. The winds cranked up again by 9 a.m. Monday morning, but nothing the force of what we had Sunday.

Norris Ware reports just .7 of an inch of rain fell on Thursday and Sunday in Washington; while Sandtown got 1.7 inches. He says we're already 6.36 inches short of the usual average for the year. That's not good news. . . . Doris Rhods at Beulah says they got 1.2 inches.

For many months now, members of the First United Methodist Church have conducted various fund-raising projects for building a new fellowship hall for the church. One of the most recent fund-raisers was conducted by the Chancel Choir which is directed by Shay Harris. The choir had a concert Sunday afternoon and took a love offering. It was a great concert. During the program, Dr. Bruce Holes announced that construction would begin Monday morning, and it did. So the church is on the way to having some much-needed space.

.. The Wilkes County Family Connection is reminding students and parents that while the prom is an exciting time, it is also a time to make good choices.
