From country to classical, music will fill the weekend

HILLARY LINDSEY
The Washington Festival of Music and Art weekend commences this Saturday, April 28, with the long-anticipated concert by Washington native and Grammy winner Hillary Lindsey. It continues on Sunday with a special performance by acclaimed musicians Erin and Brian Horner along with Emily Wasson and Kevin Chance at the Washington Little Theater. The two events will provide audiences with a level of performance uncommon outside large metropolitan cultural centers.

Lindsey, who wrote the No. 1 country hits "Blessed" and "This One's for the Girls," and who was awarded the 2007 Grammy for the "Best Country Song" for "Jesus Take the Wheel," will perform on the grounds of the Washington-Wilkes Country Club on Saturday, April 28. Opening for Lindsey will be the popular local duo of Chris Hughes and Pete Bragg who will entertain on stage beginning shortly after 6 p.m. Lindsey will follow sometime later.

Then, on Sunday, the Horners, Wasson and Chance will appear in concert at the Washington Little Theater Playhouse for an afternoon of classical music beginning at 2 o'clock.

Seating and admission is limited at both events. While the Sunday afternoon concert is free to the public, advance tickets for Lindsey's performance on Saturday are available now at the Chamber of Commerce office on The Square. Tickets will also be available at the gate as long as they are available. Seating under the tent is filling fast and advance tickets are recommended.

Tickets may also be purchased online at www.washington-wilkes-arts-foundation.org and picked up at the concert's will call. Carpooling is strongly encouraged.

Due to the limited access and parking at the Country Club, traffic and parking are being coordinated by a special team headed by Michael Horgan, who will also serve as emcee for the concert. Horgan urges all who will to park at the Washington-Wilkes Primary School the weekend and use the provided shuttle buses to and from the Country Club. While there will be some parking at the Country Club, no cars will be allowed to park along the road leading in and anyone entering will be asked to pay strict attention to those directing traffic.

A number of courtesy golf carts will be used to assist those who need it and handicap accommodations have been made.

The gate opens at 6 p.m. on Saturday and there will be no early admission. "We don't want anyone getting hit in the head by a golf ball," said organizer Debbie Wells.

Proceeds from the Saturday concert will be used, at Lindsey's request, to provide musical instruments for students in the Washington-Wilkes school band program. Through the Washington-Wilkes Art Foundation, a fund is being established to insure that all students with a real interest in music, regardless of their economic situation, will have the opportunity to develop their talents.

Additionally, a new CD of Lindsey's best songs is now on sale for $16 each and is available at the Parts Department of Washington Ford Mercury on East Robert Toombs Avenue and at Kermit's Salon on Spring Street.

At 6:30 p.m., a "Southern Pig Pickin'" barbecue will be served in the Country Club dining room. Tickets for the meal are $12 and are available at Kermit's Salon through Saturday mornings. Arrangements may be made by calling 706-401-3262.

There will also be other vendors selling food, snacks, and beverages on the Country Club grounds. However, no coolers or food may be taken in by any ticket holder, patron, or sponsor.

A limited number of stage-front patron tables under the tent is still available at $500 each for eight seats per table. Individual seats under the tent are priced at $20 and general admission is set at $6 per person.
