Birds get smarter and smarter! They make such a mess every spring on porches and door wreaths. Well, Kay Tyler fixed those birds. She put a rubber snake across her light fixture on her porch and the birds stayed away - for a while. Then along comes some smart bird that makes its nest right on top of her snake. They'll all be catching on now. ..Ethan Scott celebrated his second birthday April 15 at home with his parents, Tommy and Jody Scott, and brother Ryan, sister Erika, aunt and uncle, Nicey and Anthony Sarti, cousins, Gabriella and Marissa Sarti, from Gastonia, N.C.; great-grandparents, M.C. and Betty Miles from Franklin, N.C.; and grandparents, Tommy and Jerri Scott. Carolyn's granddaughters, Kara and Kaci Gammon, were in the group of preschoolers. They were greeted by Vicki holding her lamb, Leslie, who was dressed in a pink pajama top and a diaper and had an earring in one ear. The children enjoyed feeding the goats, petting the llamas and donkeys and especially singing the ABC song while Mo, the parrot, danced. .. The children are having spring break this week, so Jeremy is staying this week with Daisy. ..Aubrey Davis has been in the Elbert County Hospital but is now home and is a little better. ..Benjamin Bridges who once lived across the street from Donald and Peggy Ware passed away last week. He had been living in Ocala, Fla., since moving from Tignall. His grandsons, Billy and Ben Bridges, were good friends of Scott Ware. Ben Bridges rented a plane and flew up here and picked up Scott Ware and Chad Safrit to be pallbearers for the funeral in Ocala Saturday. They returned on Sunday. This was Scott's first trip in a plane and he wasn't too excited about a plane ride, but found out it wasn't as bad as he thought. ..On Saturday, Gloria and Layton Harris went to Comer for an estate sale and found out they had the wrong date. That didn't stop them. They went on to Bowman with Tracy and Marti Harris to a motor festival. Marti Harris is recuperating from surgery and is doing better. On Saturday night, Derrick Harris and Tammy McDaniel of Greenwood, S.C., came over and they all grilled out. Aren't we glad we have that grilling-out weather now? ..On April 14, Myrline Thornton enjoyed her great-granddaughter, Lindsey Bowcock's, birthday party. The next day, on April 15, Myrline attended a baby shower at the home of her daughter, Mary Jacobs, in Monticello for Nicole Jacobs, wife of Jason Jacobs, Myrline's grandson. ..Kay Tyler spent the night with the Greg Tyler family in Hoschton Saturday night. Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) is no longer available. Don't even think about trying the mail-out service. It won't work. Example: first week, Sunday paper received on Wednesday; no paper Thursday; no paper Friday. Saturday, received Wednesday's paper. Next week, Monday received last Tuesday's paper, no paper on Tuesday, Wednesday received last Thursday's paper, then on Thursday received last Sunday's paper. At this point, a prompt phone call was made to cancel this mess of a daily newspaper. Oh well. Unlike what was relayed to me by Customer Service, there is still Elberton. The 20 miles is not so long when waiting is my AJC! ..About 20 ladies, along with our bus driver Gerald, motored to Atlanta Sunday to see "Respect - A Musical Journey of Woman," at the 14th Street Playhouse. "Respect" was a combination of some 50 hit songs with women's own stories about striving for their dreams, recovering from lost love, entering the workforce, gaining independence and ultimately finding themselves. I think we all gained insight into ourselves and will now listen to some songs in a new way. Listed in the musical credits was "This One's for the Girls"
(Hillary Lindsey) so we knew the song would be on the program. We all waited patiently and when we heard "This One's for the Girls," we brought the house down with shouts and clapping. What a great song, what a great songwriter, what a great day for all of us. .. Have you noticed all of the broomsage along the edge of the road lately? For you younger generation, it is the tall brown grass. Did your grandmother pride herself in making those brooms? It seems you were envied and sought after if you could tie a really taunt, full broom. We laughed when a grandmother in the area told about receiving three brooms for a wedding gift. Such a simple gift but received with such pleasure. Oh for simpler times. ..This has been a tough, sad week for our nation. The Virginia Tech massacre was unbelievable. However, on a more positive note, we need to remember that Sunday was Earth Day. If we could all just do what we can for Wilkes County, whether it's defending the pipeline issue, picking up a few pieces of trash, or maybe we could switch to the low-energy light bulbs. Plant a tree. Ask yourself, what can we all do to improve and not pollute the environment? Maybe form an environmental advocacy group. Maybe we would voluntarily start separating our trash (glass, plastic, and newspapers) for recycling. We need to respect and appreciate this planet. Let's start today. ..Please keep Beth Keener of Lincolnton in your prayers. Also, please pray for Jimmy Davis (husband of Boyce Ficklen Davis) of Athens. If there are others, please let us know.
