Special Election set for District 24 seat of Sen. Whitehead

A special election has been called to fill the unexpired term of District 24 State Senator Jim Whitehead, who resigned from his office to run for the U.S. Congress seat of the late Rep. Charlie Norwood.

The election is set for June 19, at the same time the U.S. Tenth District election is held.

Georgia requires that state legislators resign from their office to run for another office. Whitehead is the leading candidate among a field of 10 who have qualified to run for the Tenth District Congressional seat.

Qualifying for the District 24 State Senate election will be held at the Office of the Secretary of State in Atlanta next week, from Tuesday, May 8, at 9 a.m. until Thursday, May 10, at noon. The qualifying fee will be $400.

The District 24 election will involve voters in Wilkes, Columbia, McDuffie, Glascock, and Lincoln counties, and parts of Elbert and Warren counties.
