Washington-Wilkes music: 'We are blessed' To get from the Ryman Auditorium to Carnegie Hall, you can go through Washington, Georgia. I was reflecting upon this while relaxing after a terrific music weekend in Wilkes County. Not many towns or even big cities can claim a Grammy Award winner as we can of our own Hillary Lindsey. Her parents say her proud- est achievement may be having been voted Nashville's Songwriter of the Year. Hillary has also had the singular thrill of performing at the Ryman Auditorium. If you have not had a chance to listen to the CD she produced for her fund-raising concert, you owe it to yourself to take a listen. I compare her to my music god Bruce Springsteen in the way she writes and sings about life, love, and community. The "Afternoon of Classical Music" featured musicians with local ties, some on their way to New York City. Erin Horner (Ginny Willingham's daughter), Brian Horner, and Emily Wasson lost their regular pianist at the last minute due to illness. They searched high and low for a substitute, from Athens to Aiken. They found a splendid pianist in Peyson Moss (Lee Moss' son), who plays at our First Baptist Church. So to all the aspiring musicians in Washington-Wilkes, whether you dream of performing at the famous Ryman Auditorium or the hallowed Carnegie Hall, you CAN get there from here. We are blessed!
