Annual Piano Performance Evaluations test Wilkes students The Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) held its annual Tenth District Piano Performance Evaluations in Washington at the First Baptist Church on Saturday, April 21. Formerly called the "Piano Festival," Ruth Harris served as the Tenth District Piano Chairman for this year's event. Students received evaluations in duets, prepared performances, and sight reading. GMEA rotates the different required periods of music history annually. For 2007, prepared performances included one required and memorized piece from the Romantic Period of music history (1820-1900) and a second contrasting piece of personal choice, also memorized. Each student was required to perform scales, indicating technical proficiency, and cadences, demonstrating knowledge of keyboard harmony - all in the key of each piece, memorized. All performers above Level I were required to sight read. Duets were played with the music. The GMEA rating scale is as follows: I, Superior (95-100); 2, Excellent (87-94); Good (80-86); Fair (75-79); 5, Poor (below 75). Students earning a rating of 1 or 2 receive certificates of honor. Students may choose to perform for comments only, rather than being rated. Nine duet teams from the piano studio of Ruth Harris all scored Superior ratings. Superior-plus went to Troy Colvard and Christina Albertson, Level IV; Hayley Colvard and Ryan Colvard, Level III; Ciara Meadows and Alex Thomas, Level II/I. Superiors went to Christina Albertson and Brittany Guin, Level III; Emily Beggs and Anna Beggs, Level II/I; Morgan Sherrer and Will Price, Level II; Ian Coe and Andrew Wilbur, Level II; and Ian Coe and Genevieve Coe, Level IV. Superior-minus went to Andrea Hill and Zachary Hill, Level II/I. From the Harris studio in prepared performance, 14 students received Superior ratings. Superior-plus was earned by Anna Beggs, Level I; Emily Beggs, Level IV; Ciara Meadows, Level II; and Will Price, Level I. Superiors went to Christina Albertson, Level V; Troy Colvard, Level V; Ryan Colvard, Level II; Zachary Hill, Level I; Alex Thomas, Level I; Morgan Sherrer, Level II, Andrew Wilbur, Level I; Genevieve Coe, Level V. Superior-minus went to Brittany Guin, Level III; and Andrea Hill, Level II. Ian Coe performed for "comments only." Sight reading ratings, given to 12 students on the same levels as their prepared performances were earned as follows: Superior to Christina Albertson, Brittany Guin, Ryan Colvard, Hayley Colvard, Andrea Hill, Will Price, Andrew Wilbur and Genevieve Coe. Superior-minus went to Troy Colvard, Emily Beggs, Ciara Meadows, Morgan Sherrer. Ian Coe sight read for "comments only." Lois Finlay from Clarkesville was judge for the day.
