Sometimes you can go home again Hillary Lindsey's concert last Saturday night was the best thing that has happened here for a long time. It was first class from start to finish and only those who attended can fully appreciate what it meant to this community. Probably 1,000 people sat and listened as Hillary sang her incredible songs and put on a show that would make any mother proud. She saved her Grammy-winning tune, "Jesus Take the Wheel," for an encore and that made it all the more poignant. She invited young participants to join her on stage to sing "This One's for the Girls." And when emcee Michael Horgan introduced her, he correctly assessed that those in the audience were the ones who were truly "Blessed." The level of professionalism Hillary brought to Washington Saturday may not have been seen here ever before and it can serve as an example of just how good things can be. But she was so much more than professional she was genuine, and her love for her hometown was not only spoken but exhibited by her interaction with the audience, her ease of manner on stage, and in the very words of her songs. All of the proceeds of the concert will be used to buy instruments for the Washington-Wilkes school band program. The immediate benefits for the bands has not yet been calculated. The lasting benefits to the musicians it will inspire and enable will be forever incalculable. Beyond that, preparations for the concert had been ongoing for months and, through the coordinating efforts of Arts Foundation President Debbie Wells, had inspired a unity in the community, a positive atmosphere, and a pride in one of our own who is recognized nationally for her incredible talent.
Thanks to all who made it happen. And thank you, Hillary, for coming home again.
