THE ACADEMIC CORNER What does it mean to be a "good citizen?" Boys and girls at Washington-Wilkes Primary School know! They understand that good citizenship means showing responsibility, sharing, helping others, and being honest. They also know that a good citizen does the right thing, even when no one is looking! Instilling these qualities in our young children is so important in the process of maintaining a free and civil society. Students at W-WPS learn about being a good citizen in many ways. The teachers read books and lead discussions about responsibility, honesty, perseverance, and other qualities that are important to society. The teachers and staff at the school model the qualities of good citizenship in their daily work. Children at W-WPS work hard to be recognized as a good citizen. Each month, each teacher chooses a child in his/her class who has best represented the qualities of a good citizen - sometimes they even pick two! The teacher announces to the class who has been chosen and tells about the qualities the child has shown and the actions he/she has exhibited. This helps others to understand what it "looks like" to be a good citizen. The children's pictures are displayed at the school along with information about the student and why they were chosen. They are given a special reward and are recognized for their accomplishment on KTV. (KTV is a live, closedcircuit broadcast from within the school.) They are also given a certificate from McDonalds and their picture is displayed on the wall there so that family, friends, and community members can see who is being recognized each month.
Perhaps you know one of our "good citizens!" If so, please join us in congratulating and encouraging them to keep up the good work. Also, please join us in modeling for our students - our future - what it "looks like" to be a good citizen. They're watching - even when we think they are not.
