Tigers wins two, lose two in tourney, will enter state playoffs in No. 4 spot
Starting the tournament in the top spot of the south sub-region, the Tigers hid some rough spots in games two and four to end up in fourth place behind North Oconee, Morgan County, and Dawson County. Championship games will be play among those three teams on Friday to determine the top three spots. (See the accompanying brackets.) W-W closed out the season at 16- 7 overall. A summary of the four tournament games, as provided by Head Coach Rob Jackson, follows. Tigers 4, Rabun County 2 Drew Wilson pitched six innings to record the win and Demont Gresham pitched a scoreless seventh to record his first save of the year. The game was tied at 2-2 in the sixth when Gresham and Clete Wilson hit back to back homeruns to put the Tigers up 4-2. Ty McGill also was credited with an RBI on a successful suicide squeeze bunt.
In the second game the Tigers were unable to get any offensive production totalling only six hits, three of which belonged to Gresham. Caleb Saggus was also a spark plug scoring all three runs and stealing four bases giving him 27 on the year. Gresham (7-2) pitched a complete game striking out 15 batters and giving up six hits, six runs (four earned). "The way we hit the ball, I am glad to come away with a split," Jackson said at the end of the day. "During a tournament like this you can't afford to go cold on offense and we did. Our hitters have to find a way to score runs and take presdren, sure off of our pitching staff," he continued. "Drew and Demont did their job and kept us in each game. We just have to be more productive on offense to have a chance to win." Tigers 9, Fannin County 7 In game three on Monday, April 39, Gresham (8-2) pitched the complete game allowing seven runs on six hits while recording eight strikeouts. The Tigers got their offense going in the fifth with five consecutive hits from Mcgill, Saggus, Jonathon Nicholson, Gresham, and Clete Wilson. During the inning four runs were scored along with a successful suicide squeeze from Jerrick Darracott making the score 7-6 in favor of Fannin. In the sixth Wilson came up with a big two-out hit to score Saggus and Gresham putting the Tigers ahead 8-7. Jerrick Darracott added a single run in the final frame with a solo homerun. Fannin loaded the bases in the seventh with one out but Gresham struck out the last two batters to earn the win. Tigers 9, Morgan 10 Morrgan County had defeated Oglethorpe earlier in the day at North Oconee before taking on WW. The Tigers got off to a rough start allowing eight runs on eight hits and five errors through three innings. Drew Wilson started on the mound and gave way to brother Clete to finish the last four innings. The Tigers tried to mount a comeback but came up short and even thought they collected 10 hits during the game, the deficit was too much to overcome. "I was pleased with how we hit the ball in both games," Jackson commented. "We scored nine runs in both games. We just did not make the plays on defense to get out of jams and Morgan seemed to capitalize every time we made a mistake. "Our pitchers left the ball up in the zone and Morgan made some good swings connecting for three homeruns," he said.
Leading hitters for the doubleheader were Caleb Saggus, 5-for-9, 3 sb, 5 runs; Jonathon Nicholson 4- for-8, 5 RBI, 3 r, 3 sb; Demont Gresham, 3-for-6, 3 r; Clete Wilson 2- for-6, 2 RBI; Drew Wilson, 2-for-7, 2 RBI; Jerrick Darracott, 3-for-7, hr, 4 RBI; Clint Echols, 3-for-4, 2 r; Ty McGill, 3-for-8, 3 r.
