Hospital is a must and should get top priority

TO THE EDITOR:

Why in the name of simple common sense can anyone express the opinion that a new hospital is unwanted and unnecessary?? Have you considered the alternative? How do you apply a price tag to a family member or a neighbor? Only one incident is needed to make a believer of someone in doubt.

You have been told by people who are aware of the situation that our hospital is 46 years old; it is in a bad state of repair; it will cost enormous sums of money to keep the maintenance up on the aging equipment and to return it to a decent state of repair. Why waste good money on repairing old equipment and still have old equipment after the repair or replacement is complete? That is stuffing money down the proverbial rat hole. Patchwork repairs will never meet our needs as a city and county.

Some people say we need a new school before we need a new hospital.

Allow me one question, would you prefer a healthy child going to school as it now exists or have that child, with questionable health-care, attend a more plush, state of the art facility with all the appropriate trapping. I can tell you from personal experience, you don't learn from having it all.

My generation went to school in a building with wooden floors; the air- conditioning happened when the window was open; in the winter, we shivered from the c old, but we did receive an education good enough to spark the dramatic revolution of the forties, fifties and sixties. We were capable and proud to work and make a life for our wonderful country and ourselves. We say we want new people and industry coming into this area.

In that case, a hospital is a must and should have priority.

The county commissioners need to get their priorities in order and pass an amendment to authorize the new hospital. You can't tell, one of these days they may be grateful to God they made that decision.

I am willing to invest in a new hospital, as I am certain others are. Give the people of Washington/ Wilkes the opportunity to have a facility worthy of them.

You never accomplish anything by wishful thinking. It will take vision, dedication and energy!!
