Councilmen get info from DOT on proposed bypass

Tignall City Councilmen Leon Aycock and Albert Huyck attended a meeting Tuesday, May 15, with representatives of the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) at the Wilkes County Courthouse.

Information was given about the proposed four lane bypass of Georgia Highway 17 around the east side of Tignall. DOT representatives distributed information stating that the purchase of right-of-way for this nearly 12-mile project is scheduled to begin in 2008.

Construction is scheduled to begin after 2011. The DOT representatives cautioned that plans could change, and there could be delays. The current estimated cost is $8,582,000. The project is known as DOT Project 222260.
