Wilkes County 4-H'ers competed at the Georgia 4-H Target Challenge Weekend in the state BB competition and hit the mark, finishing 24th out of 72 teams at the contest.

Team members competing were Blake Connell, Dylan Echols, Daniel Hackney, Jacob Hubbard, Clayton Johnson, Cody McLeroy, Joshua McLeroy, Hunter Newsome, Chandler Pharr, Michael Pharr, Nick Reville, Chance Stickeny, and Jared Wilson. Volunteer team coaches were Dwayne McLeroy, Tina McLeroy, Darren Pharr, and Keith Hubbard.

The event culminated seven months of weekly team practices. Each 4-H'er had ten minutes to shoot ten shots in the four positions of prone, standing, sitting, and kneeling. They also demonstrated their knowledge on a written exam.

The 4-H'ers earned the right to compete in the state contest by qualifying at the Area BB Contest held April 21. Teams of seven 4- H'ers had to shoot a score of 1500 or better and individuals a score of 300 or better.

Each 4-H'er competing in the state contest earned an award pin. High individuals in each shooting position and the high written exam scorer received individual award trophies. Blake Connell placed 5th in the state in the sitting position with a score of 98 and Michael Pharr placed 10th in the state in the prone position with a score of 91. 100 is a perfect score for a position. There were 504 shooters at this contest. Jacob Hubbard was the high scoring individual for Wilkes County. He scored a 453 out of a possible 500. At the district contest, Michael Pharr was the high individual shooter for Wilkes County.

The BB program is a part of the Georgia 4-H Shooting Awareness, Fun, and Education Program (S.A.F.E.). The Georgia 4-H Foundation sponsors the project. Locally, the team is supported by Scott Lewis Insurance, Farmers and Merchants Bank, and Carlisle Coatings & Waterproofing of Elberton.

4-H is the youth program of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
