Carter's Grove homecoming well-attended, inspirational

Carter's Grove Baptist Church on Highway 22 where my mother, the late Martha Jane "Mattie" Sherrer Johnson, grew up as one of nine children of the late William Hill and Mary Lou "Mamie" Nash Sherrer, was well attended.

I was so happy our daughter, Mary Jane Scarborough, and grandson, Tyler, carried me. When we arrived there were a number of other relatives and lots of friends of all ages. Among my cousins were Charles Sherrer of Loganville, son of my mother's late brother, Reuben Sherrer, and his wife Linda; Freddie Johnson, a grandson of their sister, Mary Eugenie Sherrer Johnson (sisters married brothers), and his wife Joyce of Hull.

On hand with a big smile and hands out to greet everyone was their fairly new pastor, Rev. Brian George, who finished Washington-Wilkes High School with Mary Jane in 1986, and his nice friendly family.

Oh, it was so nice to see everyone of all ages, especially Mrs. Doris West Walker and family of Jonesboro, daughter of the late Luther and Katie Meadows; and Grace Mathis Beazley, daughter of the late Al and Sally Edwards Mathis, and her family both of whom are past 90 years old. Others were Mrs. Julia Nell Callaway Poss, daughter of the late Willie Mell and Mattie Blount Callaway; Mrs. Christine Vaughn Smith, several of the Poss family of Thomson related to the late Maggie and Albert Poss.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the late Charlie and Gertrude Snelson Combs were present; some grandchildren of the late Stanton and Mattie Lou Callaway; some of the grandchildren of the late Mr. and Mrs. Glover Sherrer; grandchildren of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Nash; Bernice Meadows Taylor and daughter Ann; her sister Kathryn and Loyd Echols and family; children of the late Ed and Flora Meadows and family

Melvin Durham, son of Miriam Poss Durham, who is past 90, last one of the late Corrie and Lora Lee Patterson Poss, Max Armour, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Armour and family; Jonnie Walker, son-in-law of the late Dove Nash.

A nice surprise for everyone was the presence of Dr. and Mrs. Thompson Holloman of Elberton, Carter's Grove's former pastor, who had to give up his job as pastor due to poor health. He was called on the have the opening prayer. I realize many names perhaps have been overlooked. I did not write down who registered. But this is written with love to give others who were unable to attend an idea.

Many of us missed seeing Clarice Combs Tyler and her nice husband Aubrey. When you have health problems and can't go, you send your heart. Thanks to each member of Carter's Grove who has had a part in keeping the church alive and for all the new interest. Who knows what God has in store down the road.

A delicious barbecue meal was served with such a variety of homemade cakes, pies, cookies, and other things. There was laughter, talking, hugging, singing, children playing, viewing the cemetery, recalling sweet memories. May God bless each of you until we meet again.

The church goes back to 1875 and the grounds and cemetery are well kept up all the time.

The homecoming message presented from God's holy Word was given by Rev. George. Michelle Armour Pate played the piano, with Rev. George's father-in-law leading the hymns for the day. Lloyd Echols, a longtime member, and song leader, was asked to have the closing prayer which included a blessing for the meal.

It was good to see the pretty hats worn by Miss Grace and Brian's mother, Roberta George.

Until we meet again may each of us just praise the Lord for our many blessings and fond memories. May each of us leave fond memories of our love for the Lord. The pretty flowers were given by Ann and Warren Newsome in memory of all the Sherrer descendants.
