More contributions needed now for annual Fireworks Celebration With July 4th just over a month away, more donations are badly needed for Wilkes County's annual Fireworks and Independence Day Celebration. With only $2,000 of the needed $7,500 in hand, contributions are needed more than ever, Tourism director Ashley Barnett said. "We need your help, everybody. The fireworks show happens solely on the donations from the great people and great businesses of Washington and Wilkes County." Every year, Wilkes County has celebrated the Independence Day holiday with music, food, fun, and world-class Melrose Pyrotechnics fireworks display that has brought visitors from all over the state. This year, the show is going to be big, with lots of vendors, Barnett said. "We've got lots of food and arts-and-crafts vendors to set up for the all-day festival on Wednesday, July 4th. In addition to the arts and crafts and food vendors on The Square, we're hoping for live entertainment as well for that night." Some businesses and individuals have already contributed to the costs. "Thank you to those business who have already donated," she said. "This is such an exciting event for Washington - over 6,000 people came last year for an incredible 45-minute firework show that is just extraordinary! We should be very proud to host such an incredible firework show!" And it's not just about an all-day party and a big fireworks display, Barnett said. Showing that Washington Wilkes knows how to throw a good patriotic celebration could have a positive impact on economic development. "This has turned out to be one of our biggest events for attracting people looking for a new home for a business, or a place to start a new business. The owner of a company could fall in love with Washington when they see how we celebrate the Fourth of July here. It's happened before."
