Georgia Coin Silver to be displayed at Washington Historical Museum Visit the Washington Historical Museum to see some of the earliest examples of Georgia Coin Silver handmade in Savannah, Augusta, Macon, and Athens. The collection of silverware will be on display from June 1 though September 1. Although the earliest settlers Georgia had little need for the silversmith's craft, curator Stephanie Macchia said, with the advance of civilization and sophistication in Savannah came the desire for silver spoons, forks, and cups,. "By the late eighteenth cen- tury, Savannah had several silversmiths plying their trade and Augusta, too, was seeing the opening of shops for jewelers and watchmakers who also were involved in silver."
The Washington Historical Museum is located at 308 E. Robert Toombs Ave. Museum hours are: Tuesday - Saturday 10-5, Sunday 12:30-3:30. The museum is closed Monday and major holidays. Admission for adults is $3, children $2. Children five and under are free. For special group rates, call 706-678- 2105.
