Love Willis, 90, of the Tyrone community passed away Sunday, May 20, in the MCG medical center in Augusta. He was always well respected by all who knew him. He was a carpenter and worked for the late Irvin Hardy when our brick house was built across the road from the Maxwell homeplace in the early 1960s. The color brick used was the first in our area. We got the idea from a house near the funeral home going into Elberton. I believe called "blue brick," grey to me. Mr. Love also helped the late Luther Miller who was a jack-of-all-trades - cook barbecue, and around his shop, repairing whatever came his way. Mr. Miller also cut men's hair. The Millers' son, Horace, called Bill, who operated a factory between Phillips Mill Baptist Church and the Wilkes County/Taliaferro County line, near 44 and 22 crossing and the Willis family have been neighbors for a long time. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, May 25, at the New Salem Baptist Church, a daughter church of Phillips Mill. The present building is brick. I remember their first church building was white wooden. I well remember the building burning. As I recall there was a school house joining the churchyard. A storm came up blowing the school bell through the side of the church causing the fire. And about then is when the bridge crossing Kettle Creek to go up War Hill down the road across from the church, also burned. To me it looked like the world was on fire and my brother, the late Doyle, and our father, the late Em. L. Johnson, were among people trying to put the fire out. May each of us leave fond memories and a good name. They can be priceless. ..Rev. Lem Clark, administrator of Penfield Christian Home, spoke at both services Sunday at Phillips Mill Baptist Church in the absence of the pastor, Bob Rayner, who was on vacation. Sunday night we were honored to have about 50 men to come sing for us at Phillips Mill. They sing with so much joy and praise. We are now so grateful to have 50 beds at Penfield. ..Keep in mind the Phillips Mill Baptist Church Vacation Bible School June 18. Please be in prayer for all Vacation Bible Schools. Remember these children will be among future leaders. They need to really believe and trust in the Lord, and learn to take problems to the Lord in prayer, and follow his leadership. So many times it seems God and our faith in Him have been forgotten by many. Am I wrong or right? ..The beautiful yellow and white floral arrangement Sunday, May 27, was placed by Johnny and Rhonda Griffin Newberry. ..The men from Penfield Christian Home who visited and sang also shared some testimonies. They all sat in the middle, filling up that center portion pretty good. There was a fairly young adult couple who got married at Phillips Mill this past year, Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Rayner, who usually sat midway that section. Well, they sat on the back row, backing the men. I was so excited to see the center filled I guess the first time in my life with men of all ages and races. I had to speak up. When I was growing up at Phillips Mill, the ladies always sat on the right; the men on the left; and courting couples or visitors sat in the center. The pretty stained glass windows showed up so pretty for the evening service. The hanging lights all match so good. Even the preacher's tie, which was wine color, matched the window in the background. ..William and Linda Johnson visited with their daughter Tami and Greg Chalker, Mallory and Davis, in Virginia for a week. Mallory had surgery while they were there and is doing fine. ..Dorothy Ann and Jimmy Saxon visited Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Dan McAvoy. Tyler Scarborough visited one afternoon with Jerry McAvoy.
..The Alexander Stephens Institute reunion held in Crawfordville over the weekend was well attended and enjoyed by all. Thanks to all who had a part from beginning to afterwards when clean-up and putting away of folded chairs. Mrs. Grace Mathis Beazley of Carters Grove Baptist Church was one of the first speakers, sharing many of her memories. She was among a few graduating in the 1930s who were able to attend with a big smile and glow of thanksgiving. Her daughter, Virginia "Ginny" Broome, was among the ones getting things together this year. Her husband, Thad Broome, was on hand taking pictures. A relative by marriage, Danny Roller, who grew up in Union Point was in charge of music. Those attending the Class of 1953 were Franie Melson Nunn, Peggy Nunn Shockley, Thelma Edwards Moore, Priscilla Johnson Maxwell, and Pearl Fowler, representing her husband, Richard. I was happy to have my daughter, Mary Jane Scarborough, and grandson Tyler to take me to the reunion. We enjoyed eating lunch with Thomas Julian Johnson, a cousin who grew up at Phillips Mill. His parents, grandparents, etc., used to operate a store in Lynesville community. ..Remember. God loves you.
