Wilkes County students receive honors at Briarwood Honors Day

These seven Wilkes County students were recognized during Honors Day at Briarwood Academy recently.
Seven Wilkes County students were honored during the Briarwood Academy Upper Elementary School Honors Day program held Thursday, May 17, the final day of school. The program was to recognize third, fourth and fifth graders for outstand- ing academic achievement.

Cecilia Walker received a trophy for being the top Accelerated Reader in the fourth grade. In the AR program, students select and read a book geared to their reading level and then take a nationally standardized test on the computer to earn points.

Third graders Ty Gunter and Andrea Hill, and fourth grader Cecilia Walker were recognized and received a certificate for meeting their AR goal during each of the four nine-week grading periods.

Fourth grader Austin Hardy was recognized for qualifying to participate in the prestigious Duke University Talent Identification (TIP) program. The Tip program recognizes talented students in the fourth and fifth grade who scored at the 90th percentile or above on a grade level standardized achievement, aptitude or mental ability test.

Fourth graders Reagan Dyson, Cecilia Walker, and Austin Hardy were recognized as recipients of the President's Award for Educational Excellence. Fourth and fifth graders were eligible for the award which recognizes academic success in the classroom. Students must have earned a GPA of 90 or above and scored in the 85th percentile in math or reading on a nationally standardized test to earn the award.

Students named to the merit list for the 2006-2007 school year must have had an average of 90 or above with no grade below an 80 for each of the four nine-week grading periods. Students who were recognized for this accomplishment included fourth graders Reagan Dyson, Austin Hardy, and Justin Tucker; and third grader Lathan Roberson.
