Tells club of Extension Service
Rick Smith, University of Georgia Wilkes County Extension Agent, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, June 5. Smith told members that the Extension Service was established in 1914 as a result of the enactment of the Smith-Lever Act. This act established the service to one Land Grant University in each state. The program is financially supported jointly by the University of Georgia, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Wilkes County. The mission is "to extend the University of Georgia to Wilkes County to improve the quality of life of its citizens." Smith indicated that the 4-H program of the Extension Service in Georgia has over 170,000 members. The program teaches leadership, citizenship, and offers students workforce preparation skills. Karl Luken (right) was the program host for the day.
